The World Within Us: Part I
Everyday should be a journey. A never ending adventure to find answers around us, and within.
"Art can heal or kill, art can laugh or cry, and art can speak, telling stories that connect people and their lives’."
HiDose's Journey started when Founder, Shawn Reed and Regional Marketing Manager Carlo Aguilar got together and discussed ideas about a clothing business. Both of us wanted to create a brand for many years and when we combined our thoughts it naturally took root. We talked about the current trends and how we could make something a little more true to urban fashion, something with more substance. We also discussed what we could do to help make a difference in society. Tired of seeing cookie cutter shit, our drive and our pursuit to attain global recognition through fashion is at an all time high.
Q+A with Shawn Reed
When did you decide that you wanted to design and start up your own clothing line?
I've always been fashion-forward thinking and enjoy art in every sense. I enjoy tshirt designs and am a shoe fanatic. I love hats, girls clothing "not like that", shoes, and everything fashion before it became this whole new world of individuality. Music, Crafts, Painting, Drawing, etc...have always been a part of my life and the greatest memories come from art for me. I started sketching ideas since 2007 when I first started attending school for graphic and web design.
I got tired of seeing cookie cutter shit. I watched the street wear culture's true meaning become polluted and diluted with people just trying to make a buck, not people who are truly passionate or inspired by the culture as I am.
I've been doing corporate type designs which becomes very dry and repetitive and wanted a way to express myself while looking for ways to make a change in this world. I've always had a love for art and creative expression, so I decided the time was now.
How did you come up with your company's name?
We take pride in where we come from and I thought about how humanity is connected. Seeing that we're all unique but put energy into similar or different walks of life creates a HiDose of something. I strive for higher learner and I'm always thinking of ways to do something bigger for the world.
What does the Hi stand for?
Hi is a hybrid that was inspired to represent both where the brand originated, Hawaii, and also to convey what makes you high in life or creates a higher existence of thinking; What's your sense of purpose, what moves you, and what is your daily dose or doses that makes you tick.
What is your HiDose?
Creating an artistic brand that innovates and creates connections to make life better for those who are not as fortunate. Making art a central part of people's everyday lives, and inspiring future generations.
On a less political take, I'm very active. I enjoy fishing, hiking, sports, writing, music, and vibing with people.
Who are your biggest influences in the industry?
LRG, Stussy, Cross Colours, FreshJive and 10Deep, just to name a few. Locally, I really think in4mation did it right. These brands have been influential throughout my passion for streetwear. High fashion has also been influential on the direction I wish to take HiDose.
What has been the biggest challenge so far?
Designing comes pretty natural to me and I'm very business minded, but getting on my hands and knees, and going step-by-step to build a brand identity has been the toughest challenge. Working 2 jobs while trying to run a company can also be really challenging, but I keep pushing myself everyday knowing that a dream is but a dream until you make it reality.
What are you most appreciative of?
I appreciate everyone around me and those I haven't met yet; Their thoughts, their motivation, and their companionship. I appreciate waking up everyday and breathing one more time.
If you could do something to better the world, what would it be?
Uh...Vote myself president for life? Honestly, I have no idea off the top of my head. There's a lot of things I'd like to do, but no one thing sticks out as a definite #1. I guess if I could, making every single business that could afford to be more socially responsible to help make a better world. It takes a small effort from everyone, but it could completely change the world for the better. Many businesses are only worried about their bottom line.
Any special thanks?
I want to thank Carlo Aguilar & Edward Mapanao for being there to help me through the business processes, and taking time out of their lives to be dependable friends. I also want to thank my girl friend Angela Paredes and my sister Jessica Reed for always believing and pushing me to be the best that I can. Most importantly, I want to thank my Mom, Jaime and Father, Timothy, for never giving up on me throughout my life.
